If you own a building in New York City that is subject to Local Law 152, your gas piping inspection deadline depends on your Community District. Buildings are divided into four inspection groups, with one group required to complete its inspection each year.
For 2026, the deadline applies to buildings in Community Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, and 16. The next group, Community Districts 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17, will be due in 2027.
Knowing your Community District is therefore one of the first steps in determining when you need to schedule an LL152 gas inspection. This guide explains the current inspection schedule, how to find your district, and what property owners should know as their deadline approaches.
Local Law 152 Inspection Deadlines by Community District
Local Law 152 requires gas piping systems in many New York City buildings to be inspected at least once every four years. Rather than requiring every property owner to schedule an inspection during the same year, the NYC Department of Buildings divides buildings into four groups based on Community District.
The current inspection schedule is:
- Community Districts 1, 3, and 10: 2024, with the next inspection due in 2028
- Community Districts 2, 5, 7, 13, and 18: 2025, with the next inspection due in 2029
- Community Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, and 16: 2026, with the next inspection due in 2030
- Community Districts 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17: 2027, with the next inspection due in 2031
The applicable inspection period runs from January 1 through December 31 of the designated year.
Which Community Districts Need an LL152 Inspection in 2026?
The 2026 Local Law 152 inspection cycle applies to buildings located in Community Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, and 16.
If your property is located in one of these districts and is subject to Local Law 152, your periodic gas piping inspection must be completed during the 2026 compliance period. The regular inspection window runs from January 1 through December 31, 2026.
Waiting until the end of the year can make compliance more difficult, particularly if the inspection identifies conditions that require correction. Scheduling earlier gives you more time to complete the inspection, review the findings, and take care of any necessary follow-up work.
If you own or manage multiple properties, remember that the deadline is based on the Community District of each individual building. Properties with the same owner in different districts may have different LL152 inspection years.
Which Community Districts Need an LL152 Inspection in 2027?
The next group of buildings enters its regular inspection period in 2027. This cycle covers Community Districts 11, 12, 14, 15, and 17.
For covered properties in these districts, the inspection period runs from January 1 through December 31, 2027.
Property owners do not have to wait until late 2027 to start thinking about compliance. Confirming your Community District and determining whether your property is subject to LL152 ahead of time can help you avoid uncertainty as the filing period approaches.
How Do I Find My NYC Community District?
Your Community District is not necessarily obvious from your neighborhood, ZIP code, or borough. Two properties that are relatively close to one another may fall into different Community Districts and therefore have different LL152 inspection deadlines.
The NYC Department of Buildings recommends using the NYC Department of City Planning resources to determine the Community District associated with your building’s address.
Once you know the district number, compare it with the LL152 schedule:
Districts 1, 3, 10 → 2028
Districts 2, 5, 7, 13, 18 → 2029
Districts 4, 6, 8, 9, 16 → 2026
Districts 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 → 2027

Does Every NYC Building Need a Local Law 152 Inspection?
No. Local Law 152 does not apply to every building in New York City. The periodic gas piping inspection requirement generally applies to buildings with gas piping, with an exemption for buildings classified as Occupancy Group R-3, which includes qualifying one- and two-family homes.
Buildings subject to the law must have their gas piping systems inspected by a NYC Licensed Master Plumber or a qualified individual working under the direct and continuing supervision of one.
Buildings that are subject to Local Law 152 but do not contain a gas piping system have separate certification requirements. Property owners should not simply assume that having no active gas service means there is nothing they need to do.
What Happens During an LL152 Gas Piping Inspection?
A Local Law 152 inspection examines the exposed gas piping required under the law. This includes exposed piping beginning at the point where gas piping enters the building and applicable piping in public spaces, hallways, corridors, mechanical rooms, boiler rooms, and other required areas.
The inspection also includes a gas leak survey. The purpose is to identify unsafe or potentially hazardous conditions, including evidence of leaks, certain levels of corrosion, and illegal or non-code-compliant installations.
Gas piping and appliances inside individual tenant spaces generally are not included in the LL152 inspection.
What Happens After the Inspection?
Completing the physical inspection is only part of the LL152 compliance process.
Following the inspection, the Licensed Master Plumber prepares the required inspection documentation. The building owner is responsible for ensuring the appropriate certification is submitted to the NYC Department of Buildings.
If the inspection identifies conditions that require correction, additional work and certification may be necessary. Because these requirements have their own deadlines, leaving the initial inspection until the final weeks of your compliance year can create unnecessary complications.
Beginning July 27, 2026, Local Law 152 certifications and related transactions are submitted through DOB NOW: Safety.
What If I Can’t Complete My LL152 Inspection by December 31?
If you cannot have the required inspection completed by December 31 of your applicable cycle year, NYC rules allow a building owner to request a 180-day extension.
Only one extension is permitted per inspection cycle. The building must be inspected during the extension period, and the required certification must still be submitted within the applicable timeframe following the inspection.
An extension can provide additional time, but it should not be treated as the normal way to handle LL152 compliance. Scheduling during your regular inspection year gives you more time to deal with any conditions identified during the inspection.
